Tell us all about you and your organization!
new/gen was founded with the purpose to raise awareness in every community about the women’s rights movement but not excluding other related social justice movements such as #Blacklivesmatter. our new/gen Los Angeles chapter provides a platform for students that allows them access to educational resources on how to advocate and extend the movement to their own schools, as well as a community calendar with local events.
Why do you think it’s important for your generation to let their voices be heard?
As a conscientious generation with access to worldwide information at our digital fingertips, we have the knowledge and the resolve to create solutions that generations before us lacked. We have the potential, the resources, and the bravery to pursue change in our world. Therefore, it is imperative that our generation’s voices be heard now or else we will have to further deal with the consequences of the issues that go unresolved, which will affect us and our following generations.
Are you optimistic or pessimistic about the future?
We are optimistic for our future as we are confident that with the resources accessible to Gen Z we will be able to procure a significant change to ensure a brighter and more inclusive future.
What are the most important issues facing our world right now? And in the future?
Universal, centuries-long oppression of minorities has constructed a system that is reflected through issues such as the wealth gap, the salary gap, and race-targeted, gender-identity targeted murder. from the Black Lives Matter movement to femicides in Mexico, and the continuing humanitarian crisis in the Middle East only severed by the effects of COVID-19; the world is in a tough position. our future is likely to be tainted by the blood, suffering, and tears of these movements as progress to inclusivity and intersectionality has proven to lag throughout history. Nonetheless, we will remain strong and unified as one to dismantle these systems and cater justice to the innocent and historically marginalized.
What does your organization offer that helps the world be a better place?
We provide a safe space for gen Z to express their voices and provide resources for their educational enhancement. our transparency in promoting the real, raw aspects of history and the struggles faced by womxn destigmatize the issues and promote a culture of unlearning and re-education. we better the world by breaking the stigma on these labeled “sensitive” topics.
Will you be voting in the next election?
Unfortunately, none of the new/gen members are eligible voters of age. yet, some of us have pre-registered and would encourage all Gen Z’ers to vote if they are of age.
Please tell us all about your current campaigns, projects and endeavors.
Our current month-long campaign, “whole story”, focuses on debunking the white-washed narrative of the 19th-century women’s suffrage movement whilst highlighting the bold Black and minority womxn leaders that have been fighting against the forces of sexism and bigotry for centuries. as for the following months, we will take an emphasis on mental health and sex education. as for the future, we plan on hosting digital forums with other youth-led organizations and expanding upon the mission to create awareness on the injustices faced by womxn every day.
Tell everyone where to find you online and on social platforms.
